Smart Energy Choices: Unlocking the Power of Demand Side Management

With rising energy demands and the growing need for sustainable energy practices, utilities worldwide are focusing on Demand Side Management (DSM) as a crucial strategy to optimize power consumption. Demand Side Management refers to a set of actions and strategies aimed at modifying electricity usage to achieve optimal energy utilization. It includes measures such as energy efficiency programs, demand response mechanisms, and smart grid solutions that help in managing electricity demand effectively.

CESC Limited, a pioneer in electricity distribution and generation in India, has been actively implementing demand side management practices to enhance energy efficiency, optimise peak demand, and promote a more sustainable power ecosystem. As the only player in electricity distribution in Kolkata and its surroundings, CESC recognizes the importance of Demand Side Management in ensuring both reliable power supply, and environmental benefits. The organization's DSM initiatives focus on Peak Load Management, Energy Efficiency Programs, Time-of-Use Tariffs and Renewable Energy Integration.

Some of CESC DSM initiatives include –

1. Energy Efficiency Campaigns

CESC actively promotes awareness about energy conservation through social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube through creative reels and posts, as well as through SMS, encouraging the adoption of better energy management practices in households and industries. The usage and advantages of energy efficient devices such as star rated air conditioners, refrigerators, and judicious usage of power through regular maintenance and servicing, are also promoted by the organization at various events of importance such as the Kolkata Book Fair, Bengal Global Business Summit, Trade Fairs and at eminent residential complexes of Kolkata, through an outreach programme called "Aalaap."

CESC has recently launched the green energy programme to facilitate Customers in adapting to renewable energy in place of conventional ones. Quite a substantial number of Consumers of CESC from various fields of operation such as hospitality, banking, health care, manufacturing, service industries and more have already opted for the Green Energy Programme.

2. Regular maintenance

CESC has changed its maintenance regime from 'Preventive' to 'Predictive' through comprehensive online asset health monitoring and assessment with the help of Industry 4.0 based IoT Technologies like embedded remote IoT-based sensors at critical equipment like switchgears, transformers, etc. Remote IoT (Internet of Things) based sensors (temperature, humidity, vibration, fluid level etc.) are installed at equipment for real-time health monitoring. These maintenance activities shall balance the demand curve.

3. Tariff-Based Incentives

Dynamic tariff structures such as Time-of-Day (ToD) tariffs encourage Consumers to shift energy usage to non-peak hours, leading to reduced grid stress and optimized resource utilization.

Demand Side Management is a game-changer for modern power distribution companies like CESC. By implementing effective DSM strategies, CESC is not only enhancing operational efficiency but also empowering Consumers to make informed energy choices. Moving forward, a collaborative effort between utilities, policymakers, and Consumers will be essential to make DSM a success, ensuring a greener and more energy-efficient future.
